Setting out a political stall

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on October 10, 2007 5:07 PM |

POLITICIANS all the same? You decide. You may have missed the keynote speeches at the party conferences. Here is one.

LADIES, gentlemen, comrades, members, grandees, not-so grandees, young, old, left, right, black, white, sort of brownish, middle class, lower class, upper class, back of the class, rich, poor, tall, small, hirsute and bald - oh, yes the bald, too – because ours is the true inclusive party – I invite you all to share in my vision for Britain.

Why? I will tell you, and let me make this absolutely clear: I. Will. Tell. You. Now.
Action. Urgent action is needed. The building blocks are in place, we see challenges ahead and will not duck them.

There are new challenges, old challenges, exciting challenges and we will challenge those who say there aren’t. Firmly, but fairly.

We must balance the needs of the community against the desires of the individual.
It will mean tough decisions, but we will make them with compassion. The British people deserve nothing but the best and that is core to our beliefs. We are the party of belief!
Belief in empowering decent hard-working British people whose concerns and dreams I share.

Unlike other leaders I – and let me spell it out – I have listened.
To you, the people, even those with red hair, and you tell me we have got it right.
On climate change.
On tax.
On education.

Begin the consultative process, but make it a level headed common sense national debate.
Detailed top priority discussions. Centre ground. Trust. Flexible, but not for turning.
We have a framework with firm foundations and a sense of direction; forwards not backwards, up not down, round not square.
This is no time to be unfit for purpose. It is time for things that really matter. Let’s be positive, look to the future, roll back the frontiers, yet tend our grass roots with ground-breaking radical ideas and massive investment in things that really matter.
Not just of money, but in time and commitment with no short term answers; with bold new measures to create fresh opportunities for our children in the whole range of things that really matter.
Programmes. Policies. Strategies. Solutions. Values. Three loaves and five fishes.
Burdens. Things that matter. That is what this party is about.
